Abstract

The role of the US occupation in the emergence of extremist organizations in Iraq is a complex and multifaceted issue. It is important to note that factors influencing the rise of extremist organizations in Iraq extend beyond the US occupation and include political, social, cultural, and economic factors.

However, several factors can be identified that contributed to the emergence of extremist organizations in Iraq following the US occupation in 2003. Here are some of these factors:

Power Vacuum and Instability: After the fall of the previous regime, Iraq experienced a power vacuum and instability, creating a conducive environment for the growth and strengthening of extremist organizations.

Dissolution of Security Institutions: The US occupation dissolved the former Iraqi forces, leading to the disintegration of security institutions and their inability to maintain security and counter extremism.

Sectarian Divisions: Some extremist organizations exploited sectarian divisions in Iraq, which increased after the occupation, to enhance their agendas and attract more supporters.
